Turtles: get ready for the big event
The excitement is great for the hatching of the turtle’s eggs, that should happen any day now. After the extraordinary spawning on July 10th, when a turtle laid 80 eggs on the beach of Piazza Brescia, setting a new record for the biggest nest above the Adriatic Sea, the eggs should hatch right now in September. This is a one-of-a-kind event, so much so that scientists and researchers from the University of Padova have come to Jesolo to study it, the site has been carefully enclosed and is constantly overseen by the volunteers of Legambiente and other animal-rights associations.
It generally takes from 45 to 70 days for the eggs to hatch, but temperature has great influence on the waiting period. The temperature of the sand can also determine the sex of the baby turtles: above 29° C they will be female, under that male. The volunteers are also planning to install a webcam to constantly monitor the site and to be able to broadcast the event live.
