Celebrating on the water, between history and tradition
The city of Venice starts its season of events on the water with the traditional appointment of the Festa della Sensa on May 21st, a celebrations of the centuries-old relationship between Venice and the sea.
The procession is opened by the “Serenissima’, the authorities’ boat from which the rite of marriage with the sea is still celebrated today: an evocative ceremony where a symbolic wedding ring is thrown into the water, followed by the religious ceremony in the Church of San Nicolò di Lido.
The programme is then concluded with rowing competitions in Venetian style and numerous other events.
